Harm that happens in relationship must be healed in relationship. At times, a part of us can become so burdened by pain and despair that we begin to wish it would simply disappear, believing that its absence might finally bring relief. You may come to therapy hoping to finally cut away that painful part of yourself. Yet often, that is the very part that is longing to be met with tenderness, curiosity, and acceptance. In our work together, you may find me offering care and attention to those things, inviting you to do the same. With courage and compassion, we will work toward making space for the parts of you that feel most difficult to accept—that may even feel unlovable. In time, this can create the conditions for something deeper than relief: the possibility of genuine healing and greater wholeness.
I love working with adults of all genders, and many of my clients are men and LGBTQ people who feel lonely, isolated, ashamed, or even irredeemable. You may feel unable to be fully authentic with others, confused by your relationships, or afraid that you may never be able to form the relationships you long for. You may struggle with intense anger, cold resentment, sexual anxiety, unbearable grief, or perfectionism. You may find yourself behaving in ways that feel misaligned with your values—or feel uncertain about what your values are in the first place. You may feel that the only version of yourself you truly know is the one other people see.
In therapy, we will talk as two people in a room together. You may be looking for tools and strategies to feel better, and if so we can certainly work with those. My first priority will be to get to know you in your fullness, including the parts of yourself you have grown accustomed to hiding. Therapy with me will likely involve a series of invitations—and challenges. Will you become curious about yourself? Will you turn toward the parts of yourself that are tired of being ignored? Will you open yourself to the possibility of forgiveness, care, or love—from others, and perhaps from yourself? In therapy, I often find two parallel processes take place: learning to understand and accept the person that you are, and learning to bring that understanding into your relationships with others, in pursuit of deeper connections.
I’m credentialed as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate, with a Master’s degree in Existential-Phenomenological Psychology from Seattle University, where I also earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. For many years, I worked in the field of behavioral therapy, which brought me into contact with many wonderful people, but which also left me wanting something deeper and more humanistic in my approach to healing. I loved learning a non-behavioristic approach to the human person—one that lets go of the question “Why are you the way you are?” in favor of the question “What’s it like to be you?”
My family moved to the United States from the United Kingdom when I was very young, and I moved to the Pacific Northwest in my early adulthood. My loves in life are my queer community, my bicycle, and my very noisy cat Ripley (and, if I may disclose very vulnerably, my Nintendo Switch).
