6 Questions to ask your therapist before
starting therapy.
Before starting therapy, it's important to learn about and begin to get to know your therapist to ensure that you feel comfortable and confident in their therapeutic process and in the potential for a therapeutic relationship with them. Data shows us that “fit” - the feeling that your therapist understands you and cares about you - is the most important indicator that your therapy will be successful.
Here are 6 questions you may consider asking:
What is your therapeutic approach and what can I expect from it?
What do typical sessions look like? Am I supposed to bring material to talk about or will you direct the sessions?
What is your hope for a client who comes to therapy and what does success look like?
What are your fees and insurance options, and what is the cancellation policy?
What is your availability, and how often will we meet?
How do I know if you are the right fit for me?
Asking these questions can help you understand your therapist's approach, build a positive rapport with them, and establish clear expectations for the therapy process. It can also help you make an informed decision about whether a particular therapist is the right fit for you.
