Counseling Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors: An Introduction
Friday, May 17th | 11:30 am - 1:00 pm PST | Zoom webinar
This training will address how various grades of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) may present in the clinical space, and how mental health professionals might begin to approach their work with TBI survivors. Content will explore self-concept and executive functioning changes associated with TBI, social positionality and identity intersections, and strategies for bridging the gap between immediate neuropsychological rehabilitation and long-term therapeutic care. Many TBI survivors are left feeling isolated and under-resourced in navigating their lives post-injury, and the therapy space offers a beautiful opportunity to provide understanding, compassion, and advocacy where larger systems fail to integrate holistic wellness.

What You’ll Learn
The overarching goal of this training is to facilitate a dynamic conversation about TBI, an area that is traditionally under-integrated amongst graduate counseling, clinical, and social work programs. This training is intended to shed light on a diverse range of TBI-related considerations including politically relevant areas such as gender differences, health care disparity, the opioid epidemic, and domestic violence. The information provided is geared towards helping mental health professionals understand how to better understand medical information and assessment strategies for executive functioning, break down the anatomy of self-concept changes as a critical component of TBI recovery, and gain access to strengths-based language and tangible resources for TBI survivors.
